About Our Community
-
Welcome to the International Living Community!
This is a place where you can network, ask questions, and learn from one another (both your members and our team of correspondents and editors, too). It’s also about encouraging and supporting one another.
It IS OK to: Post asking for feedback on a place you’re curious about. Maybe a fellow member has been there, and you’re interested in their thoughts or if they have any recommendations about the area—a place to stay or eat, even. Maybe you’re interested in knowing about the current on-the-ground situation someplace. Maybe you’ve read an article in IL and have a question for the correspondent who wrote it. Ask away!
But please remember that this is a discussion forum and everybody brings with them their own priorities and proclivities, likes and dislikes. What’s important to you in a destination might not be what’s important for somebody else. (“I need opera and art galleries!” versus “I need a place I can wear flip-flops and play my guitar at a beach bar!”)
Point is: You might not agree with a fellow member’s assessment of a place. That’s your prerogative.
By all means: Share your opinion. But please remain civil and gracious.
When our members meet in person, they often become fast friends—after all, this is a community of thoughtful, internationally-minded folks who share a curiosity about the world. We hear stories all the time of people who, having met at one of our events, proceed to travel together annually for years. We love that. But please use caution and employ your good judgment “connecting” online. This is not a dating forum.
Is it NOT OK to: Overwhelm the community with ad-type posts. If you’re making a recommendation of some sort, great. But this is not a marketing forum. It is NOT OK to keep reposting ad-type posts.
It is NOT OK to: Solicit romance. Honestly, people regularly tell us we should create an IL dating service. This is NOT it.
When in doubt about a post, please ask the admins.
