People have mentioned moving overseas due to the political situation in the US, but there's no perfect place in the world. The far right is rising in Europe, and there's also a lot of instability in other parts of the world. Can the current expats comment on the political, and socio-politcal situation where they are?

I tried loggin in at 11 EST and the link would not load. I called in and was placed on hold for 30 minutes before being disconnected. I was finally able to login a back way into the community forum but the youtube video had to be fast forwarded to 45 minutes in to start the presentation and then it ended in the middle of Susan Haskins talking 15 minutes later. How do we access Part 2?!?

Really disappointed that this won't play correctly. Stops, starts, ends. I've refreshed dozens of times and tried on other browsers. I've now listened to the first 11 minutes 3 times.
Can you provide a link to WHOLE conversation?

Lots of countries also have some form of a "retirement" visa which do not require any kind of investment in the coutnry. You will, though, need to show that you have a certain amount of verified income each month...pension or social security, savings and investments, etc.

Yes, of course. Many "snowbirds" do exactly that... go abroad during winter months. (There are "sweatbirds," too--from states like Arizona, Texas, Florida--who flee to cooler climates in the summer.) The good thing about being a part-time expat is that you likely won't need a visa. Mexico, for instance, allows 180 days on a tourist visa. Other countries will give you 90 days but make it easy to go to immigration office for a 90-day extension. If this is what you want to do, go for it. You will be in good company.

If you have a small income, I would definitely point you to coastal Ecuador, although I think you'll find that some of the mountain communities there are even more affordable as you won't need heat or AC and that's where food is grown, so it doens't need to be transported and it more affordable.

I tried this link to this webinar about a dozen times and it did not work. I waited on the phone for customer service for 42 minutes and no one came on - listened to classical music which was nice - but I wanted to be on the webinar. I sent an email to customer service and they answered one of my questions about where were all the publications I paid for but had not received in the last three months. But, they did not answer to how to get your link to work. Very dissapointed with the level of customer service from this company.

I currently live in Portugal, 20 minutes south of Porto. I relocated all on my own from Colorado. All of the popular rental sites work as well as some from the UK for short term rentals. You need to think about where you want to be at in Porto to determine where to rent but the public transportation is very good and the center is very walkable.

I came to Portugal in May 23 to start the process of residency. I didn't have a fental agreement at the time and didn't know where I wanted to live. I got a short term rental and started exploring, while at tbe same time started the application process. 6 weeks in I signed an agreement, got my NIF, NISS, and started my application process. I flew back to the US for my VFS appointment and now I have 2 year residency. I suggest you do a scouting trip to start your process.

New to IL and may have missed some info about moving o-seas not necessarily because of needing to cut cost of living but able to afford greater national security, political solidity, good health care, etc. Any info researched by IL in Switzerland, Poland, Nordic countries, ??

I have relocated from Colorado to Greece in 2022 and then from Greece to Portugal in 2023 due to tax reasons. Algarve is great, much more like the Mediteranean but the are so many beautiful places in Portugal to look at. 1BB2CE22-621A-4A07-A684-9779C61CCF2A.jpeg

I moved to Portugal and applied for the NHR status before it ended to get a tax deferral for Portuguese tax but rules have changed since. Before I was always careful of the 183 day rule. There are places here that cater to short term rental but more than likely; it will be an upfront cost.
