    Hi Suzan:
I have been contemplating relocating to another country for quite sometime. I originally came to the US from Bombay, India over sixty years ago. The Christmas 2022, I visited Mumbai, where I still have some family, and decided that the air over most of the places there is rather unhealthy, and would not like to live there.
I have come up with a list of what I consider desirables, and would appreciate your suggestions, using your extensive travel experiences. I am now 91, but still quite young, except that 13 years ago I fell 8 ft and suffered a spinal compression fracture. which is now limiting walks, and have to use a walker. Following is my list of preferences -

    1. Clean, healthy air
    2. Milder climate
    3. Fresh vegetables available within walking distance. Am a vegetarian.
    4. don't need a car. (I would like to stop driving)
    5. Where it is cheaper to live. In California it is getting out of hand.
    6. Language-wise prefer English. But if I had to I can learn another language.
    7. Have to have a place where streets are fairly level. Last Christmas I visited Guatemala, where most towns had uneven cobblestone streets, and I could not walk anywhere with my walker. Unpaved streets are okay, as long as they are fairly even.

Thank you for your considered opinions.

Hi. I'm hoping to emigrate to Portugal in a year or two. I have 2 dogs (one is a service dog), and two cats. I live in Colorado, USA. What's the best way to take my pets with me? (I am a divorced, single, senior citizen; female.)
    Thanks!
    Susan Easley 😌

Hi Suzan, love this opportunity to ask questions. I have several LOL! Hopefully they will also help others.....

    1. IL has recommended asking for a discount on all rentals but when I ask on those hosted through Air BNB they always say they can’t change the price listed there. Suggestions?
    2. I am moving to Spain in January 2025 and my lawyer says it will take about 6 months for my visa to be approved. I must stay in the country during that time. Then I plan to go back to the US for a month or two, pack up my stuff, and then head back to Spain to live full-time. I’m trying to figure out how to arrange for a 6 month rental for the first stay that could perhaps go longer in case the visa process takes more time and then find a place when I get back to Spain for 6 to 12 months. I won’t know the exact dates I need to rent for each rental period since the visa application process could take longer. How do I do this? 🙂
    3. There is a specific little town that I want to rent long-term on the coast of Spain but I only find 10 rentals on Idealista. What would you recommend?
    4. When is the best time to start looking for long-term rentals - say for 6 months or longer? Is 6 months before my arrival a good timeframe to give me peace of mind that I have a place or is that too far in advance for landlords? (This is in Spain)

Thank you Suzan and International Living!

Hi! Sorry for this it's a tech question. Right after clicking on the link to come here I got an email from no-reply@il.nodebb.com telling me to click on a link to "verify my account". Is this from IL and should I comply? Thanks!

I am looking for good universities that teach at least a good portion in English so I can add new knowledge and skills in a safe environment. Preferably low tax and amenable to Dr Greger's vegetarian diet recommendations and very good air quality. The IL books tend to fixate on Europe what about Malaysia or the like?

@SPREZIOSI-0 Thanks for joining the conversation! This is a text-based Live Q&A, and the post won't be taken down afterward, so there's no need to worry about time sensitivity. Feel free to ask any questions you have on the topic; Suzan will respond if she can. And all the questions and answers will be here to read through later at your convenience.

I have heard that the best way to negotiate a rental price is to speak directly to rhe owner rather than a real estate agent. Is it fairly easy to find out who owns the property?

I'm planning a slow tour of Europe for later this year, probably: Ireland, Scotland, and Britain to start off, and I'll be looking for moderately long stays in these countries. Other than Airbnb, where would you recommend looking?

HI Alan, you will be going in rainy season, so keep that in mind...but that's okay, anytime is a good time for Panama. Not sure what you'd like me to answer but if you are looking for a place to stay, you can start by looking on AirBnB, VRBO, etc. Another option is to look at local realtor websites—they often have rentals. Look by location...in other words, Google “rentals Boquete, Panama.” Another good resource is Facebook. I’m a member of a group called “Panama Real Estate Buy Sell Rent” and you’ll often find properties there. And join specific Facebook groups such as “Expats in Boquette, Panama” and ask for rental agent recommendations.
