I moved to Portugal and applied for the NHR status before it ended to get a tax deferral for Portuguese tax but rules have changed since. Before I was always careful of the 183 day rule. There are places here that cater to short term rental but more than likely; it will be an upfront cost.

How to Move Out of the US WorkshopI came to Portugal in May 23 to start the process of residency. I didn't have a fental agreement at the time and didn't know where I wanted to live. I got a short term rental and started exploring, while at tbe same time started the application process. 6 weeks in I signed an agreement, got my NIF, NISS, and started my application process. I flew back to the US for my VFS appointment and now I have 2 year residency. I suggest you do a scouting trip to start your process.

All of the popular rental sites work as well as some from the UK for short term rentals. You need to think about where you want to be at in Porto to determine where to rent but the public transportation is very good and the center is very walkable.
