Chip , I was looking at Syracuse on Sicily. Didnt look very expensive. Im single so a 1 BR furnished would do it. Is the visa requirement different than Italy proper? How long can you stay on a passport? Any other insights are welcome.

The short answer is the US and Portugal ( along with other countries ) have a cooperative tax agreement whereby only one entity will tax us. As a U.S. citizen our IRS gets first dibs on taxation so you don't gat double taxed. There are lots of reports available in the IL site providing details on tons of subjects.

To clarify, I am coming to Portugal the week of October 16 to hopefully finalize plans on an apartment purchase in the Algarve region above Portimao. So in anticipation of that move in the near future looking for advice on how any of you transported your belongings.

What has been your experience moving more than a few suitcases of clothing internationally? My apartment is fully furnished so I'm thinking about pictures, bicycle, books, kitchen things and the like. Put on the airline, FedEx or some other method?
