Hi AD1452, A scouting trip to Portugal sounds like a good plan. A tip: You might try leaving your question under the Portugal category of this Internatillnal Living Community section. A lot of people go straight to the country section they are interested in or know about.

    Greetings All,
New member here. I've been thinking about a 5 year plan to move from the US (NYC) to an UE/UK country. Right now top of my lists are Portugal (Been there once) and Malta (Never been),
These are not listed in any order.
My thoughts are this would be a semi-retirement. I am a color corrector in the film/tv world. So I can teach finishing of film and tv.
I will have my SS payments and a not great retirement fund to draw from.
Living in NYC is not cheap as people know so quality of life is going to be much better doing something like this.
    Thanks
    Evan

I am retiring the end of July and plan to do a scouting trip to Portugal for 2 months in Feb. 2025. Also going to the Costa del Sol region of Spain, the Canary Islands, and Malta - these trips will be April through June. All trips for the purpose of making a truly informed decision that best fits me. By the way, you're not crazy. Have a back up plan so if you don't like it after 6 months to a year, you can always return to the US. That's one of my back up plans. The other is that I can try each country for a few months and then decide. Since the Shengren area has a limit on how long you can stay in any of its nations, hoping over to the UK is a great option. That way, you're still close enough to the EU to return without flying back to the US.
