Investigating Malaysia resources in-country

My wife and I are looking at international locations to potentially spend our retirement, either full or part time. Malaysia has piqued our interest and we are in the early stages of planning a trip there. We are planning to fly into Kuala Lumpur and want to look at a few things there. Penang, though has caught our attention.
We would like to find out if there are resources in the IL community that could provide us with assistance while in country.
Neither of us are interested in either city or rural life--we prefer something in-between. Close to cultural and dining, but not in the midst of the hustle and bustle of a big city.
If anyone knows, or can recomend some people to reach out to for this fact-finding trip it would be greatly appreciated.

I currently live in Penang and have recently moved here in September 2024. I also lived in Johor State in DesaruCoast near Johor Baru from 2018 - 2021. Happy to get together once you arrive in Penang. please reach out to me shavrilla1@mac.com

We have literally just returned from Penang ( & Langkawi) as part of a 6 week Asia trip.
We basically wanted to ascertain if there was any place in Thailand or Malaysia that would woo us away, for part of the year, from a very nice (but expensive) life in Australia.
Alas we did not find anywhere that suited.
We gave it a good crack, staying 4-6 days in airbnb's in each town/city experiencing/engaging in both expat and local areas.
