One of the best things for me about moving to France, Portugal, Spain or Montenegro is going car free. I have previously lived in the UK, Europe, Latin American and Asia and never owned a car in those years. So I don't want a place where I need a car, but I don't want a huge city with the expense, noise, etc. So what are the best car free places in those areas?

As a single woman, I am looking for safe locations to move to that will stretch my dollars. I am looking for strong expat communities for singles, if possible. I prefer to rent, as this will be my first time living outside of the US. Willing to go car-free. Also concerned about Panama.

For France, you can look at Nice which has a thriving expat community for singles. I'd also consider Lyon and even Paris.

Terry, I missed the first part of your presentation. Where is the region within Portugal you were talking about? I am interested in the north above Porto. Do you know anything about that region? Any thoughts or recommendations?

I would like to stay in Europe beyond the 90 days allowed. Which visas in Europe would allow us to stay for a couple of years without taxing our income earned in the US? I would consider renting or buying in the right areas.

                Hello,

For France, it's the Long Stay visa which is fairly easy to get and covers you for 12 months, then you renew it in France. You apply in the USA. All of the details are covered on the IL France webpage under visas.

Q for Jess. I am from Maine USA and attending last years Panama Conference and fell in love with Panama. I am bringing my wife, friends and cousins, 6 total to vacation in Panama in April 2025. I hope to interest my family and friends to retire with us there in a few years. I am ready to plan it now. I am planning 4-6 days at a condo in Panama City and an equal time either on a beach or a more temperate, tropical climate. I wanted Boquete, but feel it is too long a travel from Panama City. We want to be back close to the airport for our departing flight at the end. Please advise me. If we choose the beach, close GLP property, or similar, is it easy to plan trips from these places for the canal, tropical trails, etc...? Thank you.

I don't hear a lot about the Italian Dolomites, and yet I love that region. Any feedback on the retirement quality there?

We want to explore different countries for retirement with reasonably good weather all year around. We want to try them out during winter. What resources can be used for finding one month rentals of fully furnished apartments or houses? Is there a list of resources for the top 20 countries in the January issue?

For France, you can try the Morning Croissant website to find one-month rentals of furnished apartments.

A very worthshile webinar for anyone interested in living elsewhere. I have visited all of these countries and each has much to add to living a fabulous life. It just boils down to one's preference for weather, adventure, culture, accessability, and the food. The people in all these locales are welcoming and helpful.
I don't have a spcecific question, but want to provide positive encouragement for anyone willing to look beyond the shores of one's home country.

Bel, 1) How do you deal with the threat of hurricanes where you live, and with global warming, is this becoming a greater concern? Also, why do you prefer where you are to a place like Puerto Vallarta? Thank you!

Hi Jill, I have always lived in the tropics so hurricanes are a part of life. Yes the do happen but in 8years living in the Mexican Caribbean we have had 2 that caused a little damage, not huge ones that devestate the entire island or anything. As for Puerto Vallarta, I've never been but have spoken to people living there. Very similar weather, but our water is prettier and yes hurricanes do happen over on the west coast as well. So if you're considering these locations please don't be put off, they are built for it. The houses are sturdy and able to hndle it.
                            Cheers, Bel.

As part of the visa expats need to carry private health insurance because it's affordable. We also have access to the public system but most expats, including myself prefer to go private where wait times are less and most doctors speak English.

                                      Hello,

The real estate market in Nice is a bit tighter than other cities but not impossible to rent. If you rent in the historic center, you can expect a starting rent of $1600 for a 2-bedroom if not slightly more. The figures can go up quite a bit the closer you get to the seaside. Many look to go a bit further out of the center and take the tram or bus in to town. It's a wonderful city!
