Year after year, Mercer ranks Uruguay's capital, Montevideo, as the city offering the highest quality of life in South America. What makes Montevideo so livable? Contributing factors include its political and social stabilty, with policies that seek to offer opportunity, promote dignity, and provide support for those in need.

Have you considered Uruguay? If so, I'm interested to learn your thoughts. Also, if you have any questions I'm glad to share what I know. (I've lived here since 2006.)

    Hello David,
I received your reply to my question re: organized expat groups and internet availability and reliability.
    Thank you!
I'll explore the Puntadelesteexpats.com; a much appreciated link! The idea of local Spanish classes as a way to connect with expats and others was one I hadn't considered from that viewpoint. I will definitely explore that one once I land in my long-term living situation!
For starters I do plan to study in one of the intensive Spanish teaching programs in MVD that you previously mentioned, maybe for a month, so that my facility with the language has a headstart. Ongoing Spanish group lessons in the locale I settle in makes a lot of sense from all angles! So thank you!
Re: internet: the download and upload speeds you described are more than adequate for my needs. Are these speeds those of a basic homeplan in MVD? Or out further. One person I spoke with (a realtor from MVD) seemed to think that the further out from MVD one goes, the weaker and less reliable the signal...???
David, thank you so much for your support in answering my questions!
    Katherine

    Hi Katherine,

It's good to hear from you.

I'm glad you liked the Spanish lessons idea.

The Internet speeds I gave you was for my basic fiber-optic home plan, which are the standard speeds in places that have fiber-optic line, which I believe is most cities and larger towns in Uruguay. ( I see articles now and again how they are putting fiber-optic lines in pretty remote and small towns.) All in-home Internet in Uruguay is provided by a company called Antel.( Here is a link ro their page giving the cost and speeds of their basic fiber-optic plan. https://tienda.antel.com.uy/plan/38/fibra-basico?) But of course, if you found a specific place you wanted to live, it would be wise to confirm it has a fiber-optic line and carries the basic advertised speeds.

    Best regards,
    David

David, thank you for the link! I'll search to see if they might also have any map of the fiberoptics lines. I'm glad to hear that you keep hearing of fiber-optics being installed in smaller, more remote locales, where I most likely will want to live.
    Warm regards,
    Katherine
