If you have any tips on air travel, I would appreciate it. I worked in the travel industry for years and know my way around finding good fares, I alway love learning little tricks from other people.

I'm not seeing any replies to the questions. Are the replies only being sent to the person asking the question?

Hi Suzan, love this opportunity to ask questions. I have several LOL! Hopefully they will also help others.....

          1. IL has recommended asking for a discount on all rentals but when I ask on those hosted through Air BNB they always say they can’t change the price listed there. Suggestions?
          2. I am moving to Spain in January 2025 and my lawyer says it will take about 6 months for my visa to be approved. I must stay in the country during that time. Then I plan to go back to the US for a month or two, pack up my stuff, and then head back to Spain to live full-time. I’m trying to figure out how to arrange for a 6 month rental for the first stay that could perhaps go longer in case the visa process takes more time and then find a place when I get back to Spain for 6 to 12 months. I won’t know the exact dates I need to rent for each rental period since the visa application process could take longer. How do I do this? 🙂
          3. There is a specific little town that I want to rent long-term on the coast of Spain but I only find 10 rentals on Idealista. What would you recommend?
          4. When is the best time to start looking for long-term rentals - say for 6 months or longer? Is 6 months before my arrival a good timeframe to give me peace of mind that I have a place or is that too far in advance for landlords? (This is in Spain)

Thank you Suzan and International Living!

Hi, not sure why you are not getting discounts on AirBnB, I almost always do. Keep trying. My suggestion to you is that you do AirBnB or a hotel for the first week you are in Spain (you can get one last minute if necessary) and then walk the streets looking for. a more long-term solution. And join any Facebook expat groups for your specifici community--they are always great resourcces. Search for "expats Malaga" for instance (or whatever town) and you should find something.

The only way to narrow it down is to visit your top contenders and stay as long as you can to get a feel for things. While there, shop in local markets, visit healthcare facilities and pharmacies, chat with local expats, etc. You have a fairly diverse group of countries on your list so boots-on-the-ground will help in your decision making.

Gated communities. They seem to be a thing in Panama even without homes on the properties. The idea of having a place to park oneself for their vacation and enjoy the community pool, picnic area, BBQ etc is appealing for those who want a place but don't always want a place. A HOA and maintenance fee of "land with amenities" may be a great way to vacation a few times a year while (potentially- depending on the HOA agreement) have guests use the property when you are not. Has anyone had any experience with such gated communities/amenities. What should others know about them before buying in?

Since the AirBNB model has been so downgraded in Spain, what are the best options for finding a short-term apartment rental (1 to 3 months) to do a test run to see if it might work as a retirement home. what are some options that won't break the bank? I'm thinking of Valencia, Asturias, and Andalucia as options.
                          Thanks!

Hi there, try Idealista.com -- a good ressource in that part of the world. Also, look at local realtor websites—soemtime they have rentals. Look by location...in other words, Google “rentals Valencia.” Another good resource is Facebook. Join specific Facebook groups such as “Expats in Malaga, Spain” and ask the group for rental agent recommendations.

I'm currently in Mexico for close to five months, and at first found my apartment via a property manager, now I pay the owner directly. I'd like to go to Costa Rica, Italy, and Spain for a few months too, and need to know how and where to find the short term rentals and I realize it depends on the city and province/state in that country.

Currently on a scouting trip in France. Realtor said, since we are retired, we will probably need guarantee insurance so the renter will approve us. Then an expat told me about a company called Garantme that helped her. What other obstacles might we encounter

When doing slow traveling, what are economical ways (short of a shared dorm in a hostel) of finding lodging for short-term stays (1 to 5 days) in Southern Europe?
                                          Thanks!

I use AirBnB if it is just a couple of days...and I am pretty specific in my requirments (must have washer/dryer for example as I travel light) and it must be walking distance to local sites. And I ALWAYS message the host before I reserve and tell them a bit about myself and inquire if they might extend a discount. Works more often than not.
