Currently on a scouting trip in France. Realtor said, since we are retired, we will probably need guarantee insurance so the renter will approve us. Then an expat told me about a company called Garantme that helped her. What other obstacles might we encounter
I am going to suggest you reache out to IL's France correspondent, Tuula Rampont at France@InternationalLiving.com -- she can help you!

Any reccomended apartment or house rentals for any of these areas during August - October this year? Nice-August, Bastia-August, Venice-September, Split-September, Rome-October

When doing slow traveling, what are economical ways (short of a shared dorm in a hostel) of finding lodging for short-term stays (1 to 5 days) in Southern Europe?
Thanks!I use AirBnB if it is just a couple of days...and I am pretty specific in my requirments (must have washer/dryer for example as I travel light) and it must be walking distance to local sites. And I ALWAYS message the host before I reserve and tell them a bit about myself and inquire if they might extend a discount. Works more often than not.
-
Hi Suzan, love this opportunity to ask questions. I have several LOL! Hopefully they will also help others.....
IL has recommended asking for a discount on all rentals but when I ask on those hosted through Air BNB they always say they can’t change the price listed there. Suggestions?
I almost always get a discount. Keep trying. It could be, of course, that I am a frequetn AirBnB guest. Tell them a bit about your self...esp your age so they can see you are mature.

I am planning to spend 3 months in France, Italy and Croatia to research living arrangement for a permanent move in a year or two. I would like to meet other IL members for coffee and I appreciate any IL connected housing.
Start by reaching out to IL correspondents: Italy@InternationalLiving.com and France@InternationalLiving.com. And join specific Facebook groups such as "Expats in Florence" -- just search FB for the communities you will visit.

Hi Suzan, woundering if there's any sites you use to check airfrares to find best price? I know Skyscanner, anything else?
I start with Google lights and Kayak. I use the flexible date functions. And once I find some options, I go directly to the airline and search further. I ALWAYS book directly with the airline and not third-party vendors cause if you get stuck along the way, the airline is always your best resource to get you unstuck.
-
If you have any tips on air travel, I would appreciate it. I worked in the travel industry for years and know my way around finding good fares, I alway love learning little tricks from other people.
Flexible dates is the best option...and play around with Google flights.

hi
i really wanted to get on this discussion but it wont let me in. I'm moving to Portugal with a target date of October 2024. My target area is Porto and vicinity. i need a rental that will allow two dogs and will begin looking at real estate for purchase over the following six months.
I'm a comfortably retired, female senior citizen, divorced. I'll be attending the IL conference in April in Portugal but would like to have some real estate advice prior to that.

Gated communities. They seem to be a thing in Panama even without homes on the properties. The idea of having a place to park oneself for their vacation and enjoy the community pool, picnic area, BBQ etc is appealing for those who want a place but don't always want a place. A HOA and maintenance fee of "land with amenities" may be a great way to vacation a few times a year while (potentially- depending on the HOA agreement) have guests use the property when you are not. Has anyone had any experience with such gated communities/amenities. What should others know about them before buying in?
I think this Q is better suited for the real estate experts, so I will ask our tech guys to move it there...

I am american considering buying a full time place to live in Argentina. What are your best recommendations of where to live and ease of use getting around?
It has been a long while since I have been to Argentina but I loved Buenos Aires and Mendoza...and when I go back, I'd like to see Barriloche.

I'm looking to spend September - April this year in Panama and want to stay a month or so each in different areas, including David & Boquete. What's the best source or approach you recommend?

Hi, we're looking for mid-term rentals of 1-6 months in Scotland and Portugal--and ones that will accept our cat . Thanks!

anyone with suggestions, please
let me know -
Hello IL Team,
I suggest that future Q&A sessions on travel topics, with experts like Suzan Hazkins, should be conducted on a live video session on Zoom or other video conferencing platforms. This would make the session more interactive and allow participants to engage in real-time. I believe this would be appreciated by the members and look forward to it. Thank you! -
I agree, this is a horrible format, many questions remain unanswered. And surely most of us are very familiar with Airbnb, I was hoping for other rental suggestions rather than being asked to google my own questions. Why have an "expert" in a Q&A who doesn't have the knowledge to give answers?

We are so excited that we invested in Monte Rocellas in Cabos San Lucas as a RETA member. Is there an organization to join/pay for information regarding best doctors, how to use your US insurance/Medicare, dentists, optomertrists, etc. helping us navigate living there as our primary residence?
@JOROBB17-0 Hi there, my husband and I will be your neighbors! We, too, bought at Monte Rocella. I’d suggest two things: Grab a copy of Medicare for Travelers in the IL online bookstore, written by Ron Elledge. He is a Medicare specialist and can help guide you to the best supplement plan that will cover your overseas emergencies. And secondly, join a Facebook group for Baja expats (with a focus on Cabo) and see which doctors are most recommended by expats already living there. That’s a good way to start accumulating on-the-ground resources.
