The only way to narrow it down is to visit your top contenders and stay as long as you can to get a feel for things. While there, shop in local markets, visit healthcare facilities and pharmacies, chat with local expats, etc. You have a fairly diverse group of countries on your list so boots-on-the-ground will help in your decision making.

Gated communities. They seem to be a thing in Panama even without homes on the properties. The idea of having a place to park oneself for their vacation and enjoy the community pool, picnic area, BBQ etc is appealing for those who want a place but don't always want a place. A HOA and maintenance fee of "land with amenities" may be a great way to vacation a few times a year while (potentially- depending on the HOA agreement) have guests use the property when you are not. Has anyone had any experience with such gated communities/amenities. What should others know about them before buying in?

Hi there, try Idealista.com -- a good ressource in that part of the world. Also, look at local realtor websites—soemtime they have rentals. Look by location...in other words, Google “rentals Valencia.” Another good resource is Facebook. Join specific Facebook groups such as “Expats in Malaga, Spain” and ask the group for rental agent recommendations.

I use AirBnB if it is just a couple of days...and I am pretty specific in my requirments (must have washer/dryer for example as I travel light) and it must be walking distance to local sites. And I ALWAYS message the host before I reserve and tell them a bit about myself and inquire if they might extend a discount. Works more often than not.
-
I almost always get a discount. Keep trying. It could be, of course, that I am a frequetn AirBnB guest. Tell them a bit about your self...esp your age so they can see you are mature.

Start by reaching out to IL correspondents: Italy@InternationalLiving.com and France@InternationalLiving.com. And join specific Facebook groups such as "Expats in Florence" -- just search FB for the communities you will visit.

I start with Google lights and Kayak. I use the flexible date functions. And once I find some options, I go directly to the airline and search further. I ALWAYS book directly with the airline and not third-party vendors cause if you get stuck along the way, the airline is always your best resource to get you unstuck.

Flexible dates is the best option...and play around with Google flights.
